A while ago, Apple acquired iTun.es, a clever URL hack based on the spanish extension .es. What are they going to do with it? Was Apple grabbing it defensively, just in case, or do they have some other use in mind? Just as Apple patent submissions can shine a light on secret plans, domain name reservations can sometimes open the vault door to speculative commentary.
Eric Calouro of Erictric.com has reverse engineered this domain hack with the idea that iTun.es could be a great URL shortening service for iTunes URLs. Apple iTunes URLs are painfully long, making them hard to share, particularly in microblog services like Twitter. Apple grabbed the domain in 2006, so who knows if they will do anything soon.
However, with the launch of Apples new Ping service for social networking around music, there is now a motivation to fix the URL problem. What do you think?
